Ralph Sylvester’s Orchestra

The Maple Ballroom, Kilfinane was built by Willie McAuliffe and opened on the 13th December, 1953. It was opened by the Ralph Sylvester’s Orchestra, who was a first cousin of the late Victor Sylvester, a famous English Band Leader.

Ralph Silvester has brought to Jack Payne’s attention by members of his band whilst in Manchester in 1933. He had been singing at a Manchester venue. Irish by birth, Silvester was also an accomplished saxophone player and dancer. When Jack Payne heard him he was immediately hired. His first Jack Payne vocal was “I’ll be faithful” in January 1934, (final Imperial session). His last was on Jack Payne’s final Rex session. As far as I’m aware he stayed with Jack P. until he disbanded in mid 1937.
