The Grandfathers from Hell were originally formed as a temporary joke band with the specific purpose of playing at Richie Bryant’s 21st birthday party as a supporting act for Paranoid Visions. The lineup consisted of Deko on vocals, Joe Wearen and PA Jones sharing guitar duties, Albert Cowan on drums, and Denis on bass. At the party, the quintet performed a half-dozen cover songs, including a dedicated rendition of “I’m an Adult Now” for the birthday boy. The band’s unusual moniker was inspired by a transparent car bumper sticker displayed above Denis’s flat door in Ranelagh, which depicted two elderly men squaring up for a fight. Though their run as the Grandfathers from Hell was brief, it proved highly consequential. Within a few weeks of the party, Paranoid Visions lost their drummer and bassist. Albert Cowan, Denis, and Joe Wearen stepped in to fill the vacancies, effectively causing the Grandfathers from Hell to morph into a stable new lineup for Paranoid Visions, who would go on to play hundreds of gigs over the next several years.
